Rubber boots began life as a necessity rather than a fashion accessory; but it is only recently through the increased availability of rubber boots and celebrity appearances that they have become a fashionable item. However, despite only being deemed fashionable for the past ten years, they haven't wavered out of fashion since and continue to be a must-have with each season, for both men and women.
The rubber boot (or wellington as it is more widely known) began its life over one hundred years ago, and was made famous on the feet of soldiers during both world wars. It was also a popular choice for farmers; with its popularity growing vastly after the invention of the vulcanisation process during the 1800's. In 1840, Charles Goodyear created the ideal footwear material from sticky rubber to an elasticated, waterproof rubber.
Numerous factories were established across Europe to manufacture gas masks and rubber bands using this vulcanisation process, with them also producing rubber boots. It was during this time that the Hunter Boot company was established, a brand that remains at the forefront of the rubber boots industry today.
However, just when did these practical, versatile boots become as popular as they are today? Perhaps it was when Kate Moss strolled out in a pair of hot pants and Hunter wellies at the Glastonbury Festival; a style that was soon adapted by Julia Roberts, Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow in subsequent years.
The fashion trend continues to date, never faltering in its popularity, with many brands including the rubber boot in their Autumn/Winter 2011 collection; also continuing forward into 2012. It is clear that what consumers are looking for from the rubber boot is a style that is 'new', distinguished and unique – something fashion is becoming defined by.
Newer trends entering the next few seasons appear to be the thicker soled wellington, which has been given the nickname, the 'boyfriend look'. This type of look mirrors the moonboot look, which can be seen in the Romika style which uses various different materials in the upper as well as the rubber sole. Equally, the practicality of the traditional wellington is retained with this thicker sole as it allows for greater durability and grip.
To truly celebrate the fashion accessory that rubber boots have become, Lotus have released their own 'Posh Wellies' which decorate rubber boots in details, buckles and other ornamentation; adhering to the must-have look of next season.
It is clear that just like the jeans before, rubber boots are become a must-have item of clothing for each Autumn/Winter season.
