When acquiring a pair of R.M.Williams boots, it's important to get the best fit to ensure that the lifelong partnership between your feet and your boots is a happy, comfy one. People often fail to obtain the right size of boot due to various different things that need taking into consideration, and this is often complicated with the varying sizes and fitting standards worldwide. R.M.Williams boots are in fact in the English footwear sizes.
Width: R.M.Williams, as with most boot fittings, are found most commonly in sizes “G” and “H” with the G fitting being a regular width fitting and the H fitting being a wider fit. In most cases, these two sizes are suffice.
Length: When it comes to the length of the boot, this should always remain the same, regardless of width, meaning a 10G is the same as a 10H.
Heel to Ball: This method is one that often goes left but it is in fact one of the most important. This measurement is calculated on the measurement of the inside joint of the foot. This measurement should then be mirrored within the boot to provide the most comfortable of fits.
To illustrate this, when one is running or walking, the breaking action of foot occurs at the ball of the foot, and the boot should be breaking at the exact same point as the foot. It is often found that people may feel as though they are wearing the correct sized boot but are actually wearing the incorrect size due to their heel to ball measurement. Someone could happily be wearing a size 7½ or 7 and feel this is correct, but when consulting a footwear specialist may find that they should be wearing a size 8. This commonly occurs when someone has short toes, creating the impression that their foot is smaller than it actually is, without taking into account their heel to ball measurement. Thus, when this occurs, by increasing the size of the shoe by half a size, additional space is provided for the wearers toes, providing a more comfortable fit initially but also providing healthier feet for the future. A third of the boot should in fact be allocated to this heel to ball measurement.
To look for an incorrect heel to ball measurement you may find that your boot is worn out at the toe, meaning that the ball of ones foot is situated too far forward within the boot. This then means the ball of the foot and the breaking action of the boot is taking place in different parts, wearing out the boot accordingly.
Volume: If someone finds that they have a loose instep fitting, which can cause the foot to slide forward, taking it out of the ideal position. This will then make the boot uncomfortable for the wearer and the boots will often feel like they are too small. Therefore, it is always recommended to fill the instep out within the boots, particularly in those that have an elastic side.
Please note: it is often recommended that a distance should be left between the end of ones toes and the end of the boot should be a thumbs width. R.M.Williams allow this measurement alongside a customers standard measurement.
To get the best fit, take these into account when buying your boots:

Measuring Devices |
Always remember that these are only guides. Guides will also show the European standard; meaning the actual size required is 1½ to 2 sizes beyond where the big toe rests on the measure. |
 |
R.M.Williams Sizing |
As their sizing is based on the British standard, a full size increases by a third of an inch in length (around 8mm), meaning a half a size is increased by a sixth of an inch (around 4mm). |
 |
Volume of the Boot |
The joint, lower instep and instep area is increased by ¼ or around 6.5mm with each fitting. This increase also appears with the same width fitting change. |
 |
Same Fittings, Different Size |
To achieve the correct volume/width of a boot size, you may want to consider the following. If a 7H has been advised but feels too short, you may find that rather than just increasing the length, you increase the length to an 8 but also reduce the width to a G. This could potentially correct your heel to ball fitting, providing the same volume fit and one that is much more comfortable. |

Insole Stamps |
If you are already the proud owner of a pair of R.M.Williams boots, then it couldn't be simpler for you to purchase another pair and obtain the correct size. Each R.M.Williams boot is impressed with a stamp containing your size which is located at the waist area of the insole. It will look something like the following:
Size 8½
Width Fitting G
Toe & Heel Type WF |

Be Firm |
You may try on your R.M.Williams boots and absolutely love the design and quality, but when you place them on your feet, they pinch or feel uncomfortable. Whilst with any shoes there is some kind of a bedding in period, there shouldn't be any discomfort when you put your R.M.Williams boots on. Your boots should fit firmly but not tightly, fitting like a glove and not changing your foot shape in anyway. Don't think they will stretch to your foot size; these are incredibly high-quality shoes and having paid for them they should fit perfectly, so make sure you do obtain the right size. |
